Additional Information

  • Eligibility: Mental Health Clinicians who have a minimum of a Masters Degree (or are graduate students with their core academic coursework completed)  in Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Psychiatric Nursing, or Social Work.
  • In-person learning which will prepare you to start offering EMDR to clients both in-person or over video sessions. 
  • In addition to learning how to provide EMDR therapy to adults, we will also cover techniques specific to providing EMDR therapy to children. 
  • Time in-between training sessions to provide clinicians time to use EMDR skills in their practice and then receive follow-up consultation.
  • After completion of this EMDRIA Approved course, you will be able to provide EMDR therapy to your clients and will have the option of continuing to work towards becoming Certified in EMDR. This will include opportunities offered for consultation with this training provider.
  • 40 CEU's are approved for PA Social Workers, Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists.

About the Trainer

Alicia Twilla, LPC received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Allegheny College followed by a Masters of Science Degree in Community Counseling from Gannon University. She has been working in the mental health field for 20 years and for the last 15 years has been working as a therapist, specializing in the treatment of trauma.  She has worked with both children and adults and for the last 6 years she has been working with the Veteran population. She became certified in EMDR in 2016 and has been an EMDRIA Approved Consultant since 2020.  She is passionate about continuing to help people heal from trauma and also bringing trauma-informed consultation/training to other clinicians in our community. 

Course Objectives

  • Describe the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and demonstrate an ability to conceptualize cases through an AIP lens. 
  • Describe complex trauma and the effects of trauma on information processing
  • Describe each of Shapiro’s 8 phases of EMDR and what is needed in each phase prior to moving on to the next phase.
  • Identify ways to help your client be prepared for EMDR through the use of a variety of stabilization skills, including EMDR techniques of Calm/Safe Place exercise and Resource Development and Installation 
  • List research that supports the use of EMDR to treat PTSD and other diagnoses.
  • Identify mechanisms of action that help explain why EMDR works and identify research that support the mechanisms of action
  • Demonstrate an ability to create a target list of memories and show clinical reasoning for the order in which you process those memories
  • Demonstrate the use of EMDR during practicum and case presentations during the consultation phase of the Basic Training
  • Differentiate between primary, tertiary, and structural dissociation and list 3 assessment tools that can be used in determining one’s level of dissociation and readiness for EMDR
  • Describe the importance of fidelity to the EMDR model
  • List and describe how to use several EMDR protocols including those to treat addiction, recent events, and complicated grief
  • Define abreactions and list techniques that can be used to respond to an abreaction
  • Describe how/when to use float backs, cognitive interweaves, future templates, and other strategies to help clients maintain dual attention and stay within their window of tolerance
  • Describe the 3 pronged approach to EMDR and give a case example of how this is beneficial
